The Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary, the first National Audubon Society sanctuary, provides creative environmental and science education, practices efficient stewardship of the Sanctuary's birds, wildlife, and natural habitats; conducts wildlife research - focusing on birds; and foster's appreciation and enjoyment of the natural world as part of people's daily lives.

Located on the North Shore of Long Island on the Long Island Sound, the Sanctuary was established in 1923 in memory of our conservation president, Theodore Roosevelt. Owned by the National Audubon Society and run by chapters and the community, the Sanctuary is a dynamic entity with many opportunities to experience the natural history of Long Island's wildlife. The twelve acre preserve acts as a managed wildlife refuge, a conservation education center and as a home for research about Long Island's birds.

The Sanctuary reaches over 112,000 people of all ages through our educational programs and appearances. Long-term reesearcg on bird population provides importnat data for education, conservation, and management. The wooded property attracts thousands of breeding, wintering, and migrating birds each year.
