Yucky Teacher Center
By Judith Bernstein

No, this isn't a belated April Fools' joke, nor does this site celebrate Bart Simpsonesque students who have nothing better to do than mock their teachers. This URL will take you to the Teachers' Center area for The Yuckiest Site on the Internet, where you can enter a world of slimy worms, icky bugs, gushing guts and gore. This site also helps you figure out how to leverage kids' love for this sort of grossness into truly educational pastimes.

The Yuckiest Site on the Internet is an award-winning spot that was created for kids by the folks at New Jersey Online many moons ago. The Yucky Teachers' Center launched much more recently, but teachers of students in grades k-2 and 3-8 will be happy to hear that it's just as slimy as the main Yucky site.

Classroom activities are built around national standards set by the Mid-continent Regional Education Laboratory in Aurora, Colo., and focus on topics such as biology, earth science, and science and technology's relationship to society. Instructors will find sections where they can learn to teach with worms, bugs, the human body, or employ the services of Wendall the Worm, the site's mascot, to help kids learn. Each area also includes links to other useful Web sites, as well as lists of relevant books, videos and software.

Forums for teachers and for sharing classroom activities let visitors explore teaching experiences with other students; but since this site is relatively new, participating in these areas is kind of sparse right now. And be aware: When you visit these forum areas, a list of all New Jersey Online forums pops up on the left side of your screen. And that means children can easily enter an area that has little to do with bugs, worms or slime of the yucky kind.
